SHOCKING'S outstanding Emirates Melbourne Cup win yesterday makes the story of Australia's most famous race one of sweet redemption.
The $10 chance, which sat three wide throughout before overpowering international pair Crime Scene and Mourilyan, gave star jockey Corey Brown his first Melbourne Cup win.
The Sydney-based Brown said winning the Cup was a dream come true after seconds aboard Bauer, who was beaten a nose by Viewed in a photo finish last year, and Mr Prudent in 2002.
Brown only picked up the ride on Shocking at the last minute as he was booked to ride Vigor which controversially did not get a start in the race.
"I have finally won the Melbourne Cup. It is a dream come true and I just can't describe it," Brown said.
"I kept looking on the outside shoulder, thinking something was going to flash home ... but he toughed it out to the line.
"I had left a spot on the mantle piece at home for a long time and now I can put something there."
For trainer Mark Kavanagh, it was a maiden triumph just as sweet on his home turf, the exuberance of his celebrations no doubt matched by those who had strongly supported Shocking since Saturday.
"Everyone keep quiet," he said.
"If this is a dream, I don't want to wake up."
