THE number of fatal accidents is lower than that during the same period last year.
While there were 37 deaths as of November 2 compared to 48 at the same time last year, the Western Division made up close to 50 per cent of the total with 18 deaths.
These were among the concerns raised by Police traffic director Mahesh Mishra this week.
He said police were monitoring serious traffic offences and feeding names to the Land Transport Authority for cancellation of driving licences.
He said 30 driving licences had been cancelled so far this year
He said the Nadi Back Road was a high risk zone as well as the stretch from Ba to Sigatoka where most accidents occurred.
Mr Mishra said the majority of accidents were mainly the result of overspeeding, drink driving and careless driving.
"While the roads are in good condition, drivers fail to adhere to road rules," he said. "There are reasons for the speed limits and road rules."
