IT was a Shocking result to many at Grants Waterhouse as the Mark Kavanagh-trained horse crossed the finishing line at the 2009 Melbourne Cup horse race at Flemington yesterday.
A local punter punched the table top outside of the betting area signifying his bet had gone wrong, followed by a curse.
Punter Mosese Doko said many had placed their their money on Bart Cummings' horses Viewed, Roman Emperor, Master O'Reilly and Alcopop to win.
Viewed had been the favourite to win his second Melbourne Cup and give Cummings his 13th victory.
"It proved many wrong," Doko said.
With the race delayed, local punters were eager to know the result.
First time punter Kameli Rasileka said being part of the betting was an tense moment.
Even the racing jargons that had him baffled.
"It was the Quinella, Triffecta, Excta Wheel, Excta Box, Across the Board and many more," Rasileka said. "I was really lost on the horse betting slang."
He said someone else did the betting for him.
As the 3200 metres race got underway, there was so much commotion amongst the local punters with eyes glued to the 28 inch television inside and outside Grants Waterhouse.
As the race headed towards the finishing, Shocking silenced the many locals as he pulled away from the rest of the field to win.
"His timing was perfect and he came at the right time," said Rasileka.
