Saturday, November 07, 2009

CLOSE to 15 teams are expected for the two-day 2009 game fishing tournament at the Royal Suva Yacht Club Saturday week.

Based on results of previous game fishing tournaments this year, Golden Eagle will be the team to reckon with in the main event of the year.

Co-ordinator Leith Wil-son said each team would comprise of a minimum of two and maximum of six members.

"The focus really is promoting Suva as a game fishing destination.

"Usually we have two or three events every year and this will be main event for this year," he said. "We're also hoping to put up an international event in March next year.

"Golden Eagles have done well in the past and they will certainly be looking to win this one."

He said prizes for the tournament include fishing rods and reels as well as other fishing gear.

"Teams will be competing for an array of prizes."

"The tournament encourages tag and release of fish.

"The anglers will tag their catch, take photos for proof and let the fish go," Wilson said.

"The winner will be the boat that scores the most amount of fish.

"They get more points depending on the size of the fish and other categories include heaviest Wahoo, Tuna, Mahimahi and Giant Trevally.
