Man attacks partner

FRIGHTENED neighbours witnessed a 53-year-old man attack his de facto partner during the weekend with a knife.

The incident has left the quiet Tauvegavega settlement in Ba shaken.

According to police, the alleged attacker struck his partner with a knife and then tried to hurt himself.

A witness, who preferred to remain unnamed, said the couple had been in an argument before the alleged attack happened.

"She came home and asked to stay with us because they had been fighting," the witness said.

"We let her stay because she was crying and saying that he slapped her.

"On Saturday, he came home and asked her to go back home with him. She didn't want to go with him and said he was abusive."

The witness said they were alone with the victim when the suspect returned with a knife.

"He started to stab her and she was crying out for help.

"I couldn't do anything so I called for someone to help us."

The witness rushed the victim to the Ba Mission Hospital, where she was treated for her injuries.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the incident.

She said the suspect was alleged to have struck the 50-year-old woman with a cane knife several times and later fled the scene where it was alleged he also tried to take his own life.

She said the victim was admitted at the women's trauma ward, Lautoka Hospital, in a stable condition.
