Teachers transfer policy

Monday, January 15, 2018

A POLICY outlining the basis of teachers transfer will be drawn out by the Ministry of Education this year, says Attorney-General and Minister for Education Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

He said the ministry had discovered that so far, there was no set clear policy regarding teachers' transfers.

"A lot of the times, for decades now people have been transferred on the basis of perhaps who they knew, who could get there first, who perhaps made a stronger representation in respect to transfer.

"We have said through the reforms, we've got three technical people through the Civil Service Reform Management Unit who are now attached to the Ministry of Education to draw out all these policies so it is transparent because we've had, of course over the past number of decades, accusations that some people get transfers more readily," Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

"Just to give you practical examples, some people get transferred because perhaps they recently got married or one spouse is transferred to the northern part of Vanua Levu the other is now transferred to the southern part of Vanua Levu so people obviously be together but there are other extravagant factors which people want to get transferred for so we need to have clear protocols in respect to this, on who should get first priority so all of this will lead to a lot better confidence within the system."

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said henceforth, offer letters for teachers would be sent to their respective education district offices and teachers will no longer have to travel to the main education office in Suva to collect their offer letters.

He said the ministry was committed to ensuring that all appointments, transfers and promotions were done in a transparent fashion under the basis of merit alone.
