ABOUT 400 villagers will now access safe, clean drinking water after the opening of the new piping system at Nagigi Village in Nasavusavu, Cakaudrove.

The $224,628 rural water project was outsourced by the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) to Taviraki Building and Civil Works Ltd. A new dam and a 21,000 gallon ferrocement tank were also constructed along with it.

WAF chief operating officer Samanmal Ekanayake said the outsourcing model the authority was implementing empowered communities with the establishment of water committees in rural villages.

"This empowers village water committees to be responsible for ongoing maintenance and repairs, thus ensuring the longevity and sustainability of their village water supply system.

"This also builds the local capacity of contractors to undertake water supply construction work," Mr Ekanayake said in a statement.

Mr Ekanayake said the village water committee received $4017 from WAF as payment for assistance rendered by the villagers during construction works.

According to WAF, this assistance was given to the village committee to help them maintain the piping system through proper maintenance and care.

Mr Ekanayake said the villagers now enjoyed a reliable supply of water and an improved water system.

Nagigi Village headman Tomasi Lawana acknowledged the WAF team.

"We thank the team from WAF who helped us lay pipes from the water source to each and every house in this village.

"We are very grateful for this project because we now have a reliable and consistent water supply," Mr Lawana said.

Mr Ekanayake said WAF would continue to implement works that ensured access to safe drinking water and proper sanitation for all Fijians.
