TC Gita: Eye close by at 9pm

Update: 11:01AM A VARIETY of warnings headed by hurricane warnings remain in force for most of the country as per the 9.08am special weather bulletin issued by the Regional Specialised Meteorological Centre (RSMC) in Nadi today.

Hurricane warnings apply for Ono-i-Lau and Vatoa.

Storm warnings apply for the rest of Southern Lau.

Gale warnings apply for Matuku, Totoya, Moala, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands as well as Lakeba and Nayau.

The rest of Fiji must adhere to a strong wind warning.

Severe Tropical Cyclone Gita was located near 21.3 South, 177.7 West which is about 130km east southeast of Ono-i-Lau and 500km east southeast of Kadavu at 9am today.

Wind speeds close to the centre of the cyclone can have winds of up to 195km/hr with gusts of up to 275km/hour. These winds may increase to 215km/hour and the gusts may increase to 295km/hour by noon today.

STC Gita is moving west at 25km/hour.

On this track, STC Gita should be 140km west southwest of Ono-i-Lau and 300km south east of Kadavu by 9pm tonight.

By 9am February 14, STC Gita should be 230km south of Kadavu or about 320km west of Ono-i-Lau.

Citizens must remember that destructive winds occur several hours before STC Gita is close by or overhead. 

Expect the next weather bulletin at midday today.
