Love is patient and always kind

Their greatest source of inspiration in their relationship would not only be the one who created love but the one who says He is love and that is God.

Everyone has a story to tell and this is theirs.

Through his best friend Natalie Raikadroka, Rusiate Baleilevuka Jr met Anne Dunn who was undertaking law back then at the University of the South Pacific (USP) in 2011.

Like any normal relationship, they had gone through a lot of hardships and broke up for more than a year from late 2013.

Rusiate said he was sure Anne was "the one" because she kept on praying that they would find each other again one way or another regardless of their break to rekindle their love ... and so they did.

"So we started fresh in 2015 and from there we set out priorities and goals, got engaged and now we are preparing for our big day this year," said Rusiate.

"What I really admire about Anne is her faith in God. She always takes challenges knowing that God will be there and this has encouraged me in my walk with God. She's faithful, kind and humble."

Their first Valentine's Day, said Rusiate was special because he cooked his favourite meal (dhal) for her.

"She thought she was going to have one fancy dinner but I love that she loved me for who I was," he said.

"We love to listen to couples who have gone through so much but have stayed together. There are a few people at my work place that I look up to and have really inspired me especially how they tackled life in their relationships."

Anne says personally she could appreciate a day set aside to celebrate love and romance but she also thinks those are aspects that should be celebrated daily.

"I think the day itself is made special by those who'll choose to make it what they want it to be," she said.

"But we are all reminded to celebrate love and affection and this year I will leave it up to being surprised as to how we'll celebrate. I think a successful relationship is a balanced one. Obviously, it's not a problem-free relationship but it's one of communication, one of trust not only in each other but also in God, one of pushing each other towards aspirations, one of love and compromise. And ultimately I'd describe a successful relationship as one where respect is given and again communication is a two-way street."

In terms of this relationship, Anne said one of her proudest moments was seeing Rusiate go to Singapore to cover the Singapore 7s in 2016.

"It was really exciting and just being able to witness work achievements along the way has made me very proud to be his," she said.

"What I admire the most about Rusiate is his work ethic and seeing him grow in his work capacity is something inspiring because it reminds me that intentional effort and patience can go a long way.

What I love about being in a relationship is that it's a choice. I love that at some stage in our lives we were complete strangers but now he's like my best friend because he chose to stay and I chose to stay and work on this relationship. I love that we get to mould it into what suits us and not necessarily what fits everyone's expectation.

We asked the duo what they suggested for others on challenging days of being in a relationship, both replied communication.

"Also communicate with God," said Anne.

"For me, prayer has, if not, is the one thing that I can count on when going through those days in the relationship. And being able to just take a deep breath and have a chat with God is the backbone of making it through a bad day."

Rusiate Jr's favourite quote about love is: "There is only one happiness in this life, to love and be loved." Anne's favourite quote is "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud."

Anne held the titles of Miss Hibiscus, Miss Fiji and Miss Pacific Islands from 2016 to 2017. Today she is in marketing and does volunteer work around climate adaption activities and looks forward to a legal career in the near future while Rusiate Jr is a journalist, news presenter and co-commentator at Communications Fiji Ltd.
