BEING raised by a single mother has never deterred Shaesta Bano from achieving higher things in life.

The 13-year-old was inducted the head girl of Shiri Guru Nanak Primary School in Labasa yesterday.

Shaesta, who wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up, said she was lucky to have the support of her family.

"Growing up in a single parent family has never stopped me from moving forward with my studies," she said.

"Having to grow up with a single parent has also strengthened and moulded me in to a young woman with a lot of goals in life."

She said being chosen to lead her school came as a surprise, but one that she looked forward to.

Head boy of the school, Vishayat Yashnil, was lost for words after being inducted yesterday.

"I am surprised that the teachers chose me out of the many other good students in this school, but I thank them for their trust in me," he said.

Vishayat aspires to be a doctor when he grows up.

Northern deputy divisional police commander and chief guest at the induction ceremony, Senior Superintendent of Police Peni Moi, reminded the new leaders to do their best in their duties.

"You are the chosen ones out of the many students, so do your best."
