7s hunt

THE top seeds are through to the second round of the cup elimination of the 2018 Fiji Bitter Nawaka 7s to be played at Prince Charles Park in Nadi this morning.

Defending champion Cross of Victory Taveuni with title favourites Army Green, Saunaka Red, Warden, First Light Taveuni, Congo Waimanu and Tabadamu Red are all in the hunt for the cup winners purse of $15,000.

The match officials kept tight control in the tournament with numerous cards flashed for infringements.

Tournament co-ordinator Jeff Tamata said the officials kept a check on the players' discipline to prepare them to play at international level with the possibility of donning the national jumper in the future.

He said discipline was a key matter which was discussed during the managers meeting prior to the start of the tournament.

"The referees are being strict with the yellow and red card offences," Tamata said.

"They will be tough on the discipline of the players. We are preparing the players so that when they wear the white jersey they do not have any disciplinary issues with them."

Tamata said a few upsets were recorded but the favourites prevailed.

"With the standard of rugby 7s in the country you can't count any team out," he said.

"It is unfortunate that the host team was bundled out by Saunaka Red in the elimination, but it was a close affair. We have a few other Nadi clubs in the elimination such as Dratabu and Gaunavou.

"So we expect a big crowd even though the weather is not on our side."

The matches will kick off today with the under-19 category at 9am. The second round of the cup eliminations will start at 10am.
