INTERIM Prime Minister, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, says media freedom remains guaranteed under the Constitution.
"Its role as the public watchdog in keeping government and other public institutions fully accountable to the public is freely acknowledged and appreciated," he said in a statement ahead of World Media Freedom Day.
"Media freedom is secure and constitutionally guaranteed but the media must recognise that there are limitations to constitutional guarantees on media freedom and freedom of the press."
Commodore Bainimarama said the government and the media need each other.
"For the Government, the media is the most important, independent mechanism through which it communicates with the public," he said. But the interim PM acknowledged his government's relationship with the media had been fraught with tension and difficulties.
